Broken L5 vertebra
Dec 18th 2007 I am currently in New Zealand, doing some aerial filming for a big flying event. The day after our arrival, we were out in the mountains for some fun with friends. We ground-launched our canopies from the hillside and followed the steep hills all the way down to the valley with our super fast “Spire” canopies. Unfortunately, I misjudged my trajectory and hit a grass bump on my way down. I found myself hanging head down with my canopy flying back to the hill. I steered it back to the valley and fought to get my legs out of the lines. Finally, I managed to sit under my canopy and landed softly on the dirt road coming up the hill. The rest was all about ambulance, helicopter, hospital, airplane transfer, hospital again, surgery etc… I was flying so fast that my L5 vertebra is now in pieces. I will get a first surgery in NZ in order to fix L4, L5 and S1. When I fly back to France and my family, I will get another surgery in Grenoble, where they will use bone segments from my hip to fix the anterior part of L4, L5 and S1. It will take some time to heal but it should be pretty strong afterwards!
